Naomi and the trustees: Eric, Melanie & Joe Rightmyer, Bob Stevens and Bob Feathers FIGHT THE GOOD FIGHT The Christian life is likened to different activities. Sometimes it is called a pilgrimage. And Pharaoh said untoJacob, “How old art thou?” And Jacob said unto Pharaoh, “The days of the years of my pilgrimage are a hundred andthirty years: few and evil have the days of my life been, andhave not attained unto the days of the years of the life ofmy fathers in the days of their pilgrimage.” Sometimes life is likened unto a race. Lay aside everyweight and the sin that doth so easily beset us and run withpatience the race that is set before us. Here in this chapter Paul speaks of the conduct ofsome Christians who wore the yoke of slavery that theyshould honor their masters. While we do not have slaveryin this country, it is to be remembered that we are slaves ofour Master the Lord Jesus Christ and our service should honor Him that the name of God and the doctrine be not blasphemed. Take My yoke upon you and learn of Me. Here in First Timothy, Paul calls the Christian life a fight. Whatever the analogy may be in the scripture we aremade to know the Christian lifestyle is a battle. No pain, nogain. Suffer hardship as a good soldier of Jesus Christ. Fight the good fight of the faith. When we make the good confession in the sight ofmany witnesses it signifies that we are ready for the pilgrimage, ready for the race, ready to wear the yoke andready for the battle. In any case it is evident that theChristian lifestyle is not a playground, but a battleground. In the analogy of a fight there are battles to win and theChristian needs to be aware that the Lord Jesus is called the Captain of our salvation in the word of God. A well-knownhymn reminds us: The Son of God goes forth to war a kingly crown to gain. His blood red banner streams afar, whofollows in His train? Here are some of the battles where the Devil attacks the Christian. THE DEVIL WILL ATTACK ON THE INSIDE One place where the Christian is at risk is on theinside. Fight the good fight of the faith. One of the greatest battles that we have to fight is the battle that goes on dailyon the inside of the Christian. Follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience and meekness. RememberJesus said, “Out of the heart comes forth evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornication, false witness, railings, andthese are the things that defile the man.” That battle on theinside is a hard battle. There used to be a song that proclaimed you can’t go to jail for what you’re thinking. Thatmay be true, but you can go to hell for what you’re thinking. There is reference to that battle in several places in theword of God. In Ephesians 5, the Apostle Paul advises theChristian, “Have no fellowship with the unfruitful works ofdarkness, but rather reprove them; for the things that aredone by them in secret, it is a shame even to speak of.” Fight the good fight of the faith in the area of secret sins. Ithas been said many times that a good judge of your character is what you do when nobody is looking. This is an important victory to win for Paul warns inRomans 2 that God will judge the secrets of men, according to my gospel, by Jesus Christ by my gospel. Again inthe book of Daniel it is said that God knows the secrets of our hearts. However, victory is assured in this area as Paulreminds us that the weapons of our warfare are mighty tothe pulling down of strongholds and every high thing andimagination that is exalted against the knowledge of God. This battle is especially tough because it is a lonely fight. No one is standing by cheering us on, ready to applaud ourefforts. And if you do win such a battle you would not wantanybody to know you had such a problem. The situation islike a preacher I know who is a golfer. He has a certificatehanging in his office that certifies that he made a hole inone on the golf course. He hit a ball 174 yards on holenumber 6. He is listed somewhere in the fraternity of a fewother golfers who have done the same thing. However, what a horrible thought it is for a golfer to be alone on agolf course. No one is watching and you whack one about200 yards for a hole in one and nobody around to verify it. You cannot talk about it because even your wife would sayyou are a liar. How can we be equipped to win the good fight of thefaith on the street, the school place, the work place, or thesports place until we have won the battle in the secretplace? No better prayer could be prayed by the Christian thanthe prayer of David when he said, “Search me O God, andknow my heart; try me and know my thoughts; And see ifthere be some wicked way in me; and lead me in the wayeverlasting.” THE DEVIL WILL ATTACK THE POCKETBOOK Another area of attack from the Devil is the assault on the Christians’ pocketbook. This must be one of hisfavorite places of attack. There are 21 verses in this sixthchapter of First Timothy and 11 of those verses deal withthe subject of money. Any time a subject is stressed threetimes in one chapter it must be important enough for ourpreachers to preach as many messages on that subject asany other. Actually you cannot begin to read the New Testamentwithout running into money. The wise men did not give theyoung child a teddy bear, they gave Him gold. They gave gold and not a teddy bear because they were wise men andnot dumb men. The gold was needed to finance the flightof the Holy family into Egypt. When I say flight I do notmean there was a Greater Jerusalem Airport. I mean flightas in fled on a donkey. If the body of the child Jesus needed gold, the body of Christ today, which is the Church, needs gold to finance the preaching of the word. It is unfortunate that some of the shyster preachers ontelevision and their extravagant lifestyle have soured somany on the appeal of the word of God for liberal giving inthe support of the Lord’s work. Regarding the religiousshysters who consent not to sound words, even the wordsof our Lord Jesus Christ, Paul tells us that they supposegodliness is a way to get gain. Then he reminds us that webrought nothing into this world and we will not carry anything out. A recent news item on television reported aseeming contradiction to this Biblical truth. It was said thatElvis has made more money after he died than while hewas alive. The love of money is the root of all kinds of evil, which some reaching after have been led astray from thefaith and pierced themselves through with many sorrows. There is one sin that very few, if any ever confess andask God’s forgiveness. They may confess to murder, robbery, homosexuality, abortion, and a host of other sins, butno one ever confesses to the sin of stinginess. No one everprays: “O Lord, forgive me for being a tight wad and askinflint.” The reason is because they think they are tellingthe truth when they say, “I am giving all I can afford.” Noone has a guilty conscience. No one can believe they havesinned. Mahandas Ghandi told some people of India asthey were going to America, no matter what the Americanssay in their Churches, their real God is gold. Without trying to be legalistic we can say that if theJews of the Old Testament gave ten percent, how theChristian can afford to give less since we have a bettercovenant and better promises, and a better hope. Surely thedeath of Jesus on the cross is worth more to us than the death of sheep, goats and heifers. A news broadcast onnational television told of a church in need of money andthey resorted to the ancient method of tithing and that decision supplied all the money they needed. The same broadcast said that the average giving of all churches was two percent. Then Paul gives this advice about the real value ofmoney. He says that we need to do good, ready to distribute, willing to communicate; laying up a good foundationagainst the time to come, that they may lay hold on the lifewhich is life indeed. How much do you have in that heavenly bank account? Listen to some of the words of Jesusregarding to all of us who are concerned about where thenext mortgage payment is coming from. “But seek ye firstHis Kingdom and His righteousness and all these thingshall be added unto you. Lay up for yourselves treasure inheaven.” When the offering plate is passed perhaps the bestrule about giving would be to imagine that the one whopasses the plate has a nail pierced hand. If you can imaginethat, I truly believe you will stop your yapping about, “WellI’m giving all I can afford.” “Carve your name high o’er the shifting sands wherethe steadfast rocks, defy decay, the only thing you will holdin your cold dead hands, is what you have given away. Build your pyramids skyward and stand, gazed at by millions, real culture they say. The only thing you will hold inyour cold dead hands, is what you have given away. Count your wide conquests over sea and land, pile upthe gold, and hoard while you may, The only thing you willhold in your cold dead hand is what you have given away. Culture, gold, fame, Ah so grand, king of the world’s martfor a day. The only thing you will hold in your cold dead hand, is what you have given away. THE DEVIL WILL ATTACK THE DOCTRINE Another area of battle regards the doctrine. He speaksof those who teach a different doctrine. It may be difficultto recognize a false prophet. Sometimes he announces thatwe need to change our methodology but not our theology. The translation of this is, “Change the methodology andignore the theology.” He certainly is not going to announceto the congregation. I am a false prophet. He may not evenrecognize himself as being one. One of the best ways torecognize this messenger of Satan is by the fact that histeaching is always without controversy. He never findsfault with any teaching or anybody. The false prophetalways makes you feel good about yourself. There is nothing judgmental in his preaching. You always feel comfortable with what he says and by what he does not say. Actually he always says what you want him to say or whatyou like to hear. He never makes you feel like you havesinned. Actually sin may never be mentioned because hewants you to feel secure just as you are. According to this style of modern day preaching, theProphet Isaiah would be very unpopular today. We remember that he challenged the preachers of his time, “Cryaloud, spare not, lift up thy voice like a trumpet, and showmy people their transgressions and the house of Jacob theirsins.” According to Paul the trumpet should not give anuncertain sound. The trumpet sound of the gospel todaydoes have an uncertain sound. We cannot tell whether the trumpet is playing taps or reveille taps because the Churchis going to sleep or reveille because we are trying to wakethem up. How does this type of preaching program fit inwith the charge that Paul gave to Timothy: “Reprove, rebuke, exhort, with all long suffering and doctrine for thetime will come when they will not endure the sound doctrine but will heap unto themselves teachers after their ownlusts and turn aside their ears from the truth unto fables.” One thing for sure that type of pulpit preaching will notbuild a big crowd. But the scripture does have much to sayabout a remnant. We live at that time today when peoplehave come down with the itch. Their ears itch to hear what they like to hear. The itch of the ears is contagious. It is adisease that will spread. It spreads from the ears of the congregation and before long the preacher begins to get theitch. He gets an itchy palm. Money, money, money, money, money, money, money. Contrast that type of message withPeter on the day of Pentecost as he preached the openingsermon of the Christian age. The people cried out in agonybecause they were pricked in their hearts. The sermonstabbed them in their hearts and they wanted to know whatthey were supposed to do about it. Peter’s remedy for sinhad another word besides baptism in it. The word wasrepent. Again contrast with the modern day false prophet is with Paul preaching to Felix and his wife Drusilla. Thesetwo were having an adulterous relationship and Paul hadthe unmitigated gall to preach on righteousness, self-control, and the judgment to come. According to the standardsof today that type of message was the worse approach inbuilding a big church. Ladies and gentlemen it appears inmost cases we no longer have a Christian church but aChristian club. Of course, we are all aware that this kind of emphasis on the gospel will not draw a crowd. Wonderwhat Paul meant when he said something about the faithfulness of the remnant? Again, how would a modern day church audiencereact to a preacher who preached like Stephen when hesaid, “Ye stiff necked and uncircumcised in heart and ears, ye do always resist the Holy Spirit: as your fathers did sodo ye.” In Stephens case, they gnashed on him with theirteeth.” The doctrine needs to be guarded and the Lord himself has given us the best defense of the gospel. He hasposted a guard and the guard is in the ordinances of thegospel. Consider the institution of the Lord’s Supper. TheLord’s Supper protects the doctrine of the church. The loafand the cup on the table preach a sermon that upholds thedoctrine of the word of God. If the preacher preaches thatthe Lord did not die when He was crucified, the sermon from the table contradicts him. The table reminds us that we proclaim the Lord’s death till He come. If the preacherin the pulpit tells the congregation the church of the NewTestament did not observe the communion on a weeklybasis on the first day of the week, the sermon from the tablecontradicts the preacher and says it did. And upon the firstday of the week when we were gathered together to breakbread. If the preacher in the pulpit says that baptism hasnothing to do with salvation, the sermon from the tablecontradicts the preacher again and refers the congregationto the identical words of Jesus at the Lord’s Supper and thewords of Peter on the day of Pentecost. Jesus said, “This ismy blood of the New Testament, which is poured out formany unto remission of sins.” Peter told the people the daythe New Testament gospel was preached, “Repent and bebaptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ forthe remission of sins.” Remission of sins by the sheddingof Jesus blood and by repentance and baptism are both oneand the same message. If the preacher in the pulpit denies the general resurrection of all the dead and the Day of Judgment, again thesermon from the table contradicts the preacher. The message from the table says, “For he that eateth and drinketh, eateth and drinketh judgment unto himself if he discern notthe body.” Ladies and Gentlemen, The Lord has posted aguard to protect the gospel and the guard is the Lord’sSupper. So if the message of the pulpit is not the same asthe message from the table, either throw out the table orfire the preacher. O Timothy, Guard that which has beencommitted unto thee.
